Israel has deployed troops across the Syrian border, beyond a U.N.-monitored buffer zone, for the first time since the official end of the Yom Kippur War in 1974 and has conducted airstrikes inside the country.
The deployment follows the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime to rebel forces.
Israel seeks to gain “complete control over the buffer zone” separating the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and Syria and seize weapons and “terrorist infrastructure” so they can’t be used to target Israel, Defense Minister Israel Katz’s office said.
